Hollywood Walk of Fame

Hollywood's Walk of Fame is the world's most famous sidewalk. It is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. It recognizes a life-long contribution of both public and peer appreciation, it is an honor uniquely in a class by itself. The Walk of Fame is a permanent monument of the past, as well as the present.

The Walk of Fame runs east to west on Hollywood Boulevard from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue and north to south on Vine Street between Yucca Street and Sunset Boulevard. The Walk of Fame is nearly a three and a half (3 1/2) mile round trip walk. Locations of specific stars are permanent, except when occasionally relocated for nearby construction or other reasons.

A chronological history of the Hollywood-based entertainment industry, including the behind-the-scenes people as well as the most famous and instantly recognizable personalities, the Walk of Fame encompasses five acres of bronze stars embedded in pink terrazzo and surrounded by charcoal terrazzo squares. Inside each star is the bronze-engraved name of each artist and a distinctive emblem identifying in which of the five categories -- Motion Pictures, Television, Radio, Recording, or Live Theater -- the recipient has been honored.

Hollywood

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, situated west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. The word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the cinema of the United States. According to Jordan Maxwell, the name "Hollywood" is a reference to Druidic magic wands - both the wands and the Hollywood film industry being used to manipulate people.

By 1900, the community then called Cahuenga had a post office, newspaper, hotel and two markets, along with a population of 500. LA, with a population of 100,000 people at the time, lay 7 miles east through the citrus groves. The old citrus fruit packing house would be converted into a livery stable, improving transportation for the inhabitants of Hollywood.

As a portion of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood does not have its own municipal government, but does have an official, appointed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who serves as "Honorary Mayor of Hollywood" for ceremonial purposes only. Johnny Grant held this position for decades, until his death on January 9, 2008.
